Sugar Skull Molds Day of DeadSugar Skulls are a traditional folk art from Southern Mexico used to celebrate Day of the Dead (October 31- November 2) Mounds of colorful sugar skulls are sold by Indian vendors in open air village markets during the week preceding the holiday. Spirits of the dead are welcomed back to their homes with beautifully decorated altars made by their loved ones. Sugar skulls, marigolds, candles, incense and special foods adorn home altars. Families also take the flowers and sugar skulls to the cemetery to decorate the tombs on November 2. Sugar skulls are colorfully decorated with icing, pieces of bright foil, sequins, feathers, colored sugars and candies and usually bear the name of the deceased loved one being honored. They are easy to make by children and adults, and if kept dry, they can last a year. Are they edible? Yes, but we don't recommend eating them (esp if you have non-edible decorations on them). Zanzibar offers a wide selection of Sugar Skull molds for making your skulls, plus supplies you'll need. Each of the molds measures 7.5" WIDE x 9.5" HIGH - with each design (skull or otherwise) being smaller and noted in the individual products. Visit our sister website at: www.ZanzibarTribalArt.com to learn more and see the step-by-step instructions for making sugar skulls. There are EASY TO FOLLOW, STEP-BY-STEP instructions there. ONE NOTE: To create sugar skulls, you MUST use Meringue powder (and sugar provided by you) - there is NO substitute!!! Yes, we sell it! Do not attempt to use egg whites.. it'll just make a mess. YES YOU NEED MERINGUE POWDER!!!! This is what makes the sugar harden. If we're out of Meringue powder you can find it (sometimes) at Walmart, Michaels and some cake decorating places, HOWEVER we cannot, in good faith recommend the Wilton brand - it simply doesn't work as well as the CK products brand that we offer. SHIPPING COSTS: Unfortunately, shipping is expensive! :) Sometimes shipping is as expensive as the molds! Because they are not flat... they must be shipped in a box. Via USPS priority mail shipping can be as much as $11.00 from us (West Coast) to the East Coast... we ONLY charge exact shipping rates. We just want to warn you.. they don't weigh much but they are bulky... you can ship a dozen for about the same price as shipping ONE. We try and keep our inventories accurrate, however at this time of year we often sell out and cannot update our website immediately. If we are sold out of a particular item we will contact you. Usually if we do sell out its only for a day or two. We are expecting MIRANGE POWDER to arrive shortly for those sizes we are sold out of... Thanks.
